The ABC Homeopathy Forum

2 year old diagnosed with asthma

Mt 28 mo old son has had bronchiolitis 3 times and at his two year check up his doctor told me that this means he has asthma. She said that it is probably the type where he will have colds that go to his chest but not necessarily other symptoms. She recommended that we buy a nebulizer and keep Zoponex on hand and use it at the first sign of a cold. I am not comfortable with this idea which is what led me to try homeopathy with my family.

He has had two colds since mid October and now seems to be getting another one. They seem to be related to temperature fluctuations and come on when the weather goes from warm to cold. Possibly diet is part of it too. We feed him goat's milk products and he eats sprouted wheat bread, limit sugar. But it is hard to always stick to the diet if we are at someone else's house. I used the Remedy Finder for the last two colds and although they seemed to be similar it recommended sulphur for the first cold and pulsatilla nigricans for the second cold. He successfully got through these colds without it going to his chest. I am wondering if there is something I can give him that will prevent the colds or at least make them less frequent. This time his cold started out on Saturday with clear mucus, not thick. It seems to be aggravated by going out in the cold and a cold room at night. This morning after waking up it is yellowish and sticky, but he just woke up. The last two nights his sleep has been disturbed with wake ups and crying. The first night he cried for about 10 minutes at about 11:00 or 11:30 and then went immediately back to sleep unable to let me know what was wrong. Last night it was a shorter time at 12:50 am that he cried and his nose was running. He woke up again at about 4:00 wanting his nose wiped and again at 6:20 he cried but went right aback to sleep after about 2 minutes of help from me. He finally woke up at 7:45. The other colds have turned into a barking cough after about 3-4 days and then we have a couple of mornings of the barking cough and a little more disturbed sleep from coughing and then he is better after about ten days. I am wondering if the entire winter is going to be this way! It is very nerve wracking to have him have colds because I always worry that it will go to his chest and he will have trouble breathing. It is hard to see him go through that. And it is hard to give him the Zoponex because the package insert says that it has not been tested on children under 12 (or maybe it was 6, but he is only 2). So any suggestions will be helpful.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Now maybe we can read it easier.

You did not mention fevers? He could be allergic to the wheat. What other foods does he eat? Stomach ache? Covers up or not? BM's OK? Urine? Look of his face, coloring?

General personality? He may have to drink Soy milk. If you decide to do so, mix only a little in the bottle or he will reject it, and then a tiny bit more next time. Do not use Splenda, it has wheat in it. (maltodextrin)

I had an asthma baby. He was nearly dead by one year. This is what got me into Homeopathy in the first place.

We had to watch every piece of food he ate. He could not eat anything green. He had to drink something called mul-soy. Yuk. He got used to it.

Some children are allergic to peanuts, could kill them.

So, first, answer Q's, sentence by sentence so we can read them.

Don't believe everything an MD tells you.

The inhaler can become a habit that is near impossible to break. I have adult clients that really no longer need them, but cannot emotionally give them up.

Let's continue to talk and we will find a remedy. By the way, my little boy is 42 and hasn't had "asthma" since age 7. It would have been sooner if I had known more. Sabra

Thanks for responding Sabra. I wasn't sure how to write it all out. I will answer your ???? now.

Fevers - In his last two colds he only had one afternoon during the last one where he had a very low grade fever under 100 degrees. When he gets the bronchiolitis, he goes for days or weeks without a fever or a low grade one and just a runny nose and then the fever comes on suddenly usually at night time and shoots up to 102 or 103 under the arm. Currently no fever.

Other foods he eats - he eats a lot of fruit--bananas, apples pears, plums, oranges. He likes sweet potatoes and sometimes carrots, green beans and tomatoes. We try to only give him organically grown food. He eats rice and oatmeal. Goat cheese and yogurt. He eats almond butter and jelly on his bread. He likes turkey, sometimes chicken and ham. French fries which he doesn't get often.

Stomach ache - he doesn't complain of them that I can tell. He did have a vomiting episode after soy yogurt one time and our alternative practitioner told us to take him off soy and cows milk. She said sprouted wheat was okay because no flour.

Covers - He does not stay under his blankets at night. I keep him in footy pjs and sometimes heat the room up slightly with a space heater before bed. I try to make it not too hot and stuffy.

BMs - today he had a bit of a slimy pale brownish yellow one first thing in am.

Urine - very strong ammonia smell in am. Not sure of color as still in diapers. Shows up better the few times he wears disposables and it seems to be yellow about light to medium yelllow

Face - lately when he gets a cold his cheeks turn red. Sometimes bright red. Currently just a little pink.

Personality - He is a polite happy boy for most part. He gets a little rowdy when he doesn't take a nap which is about half the time and then he doesn't listen well. Lately he has been hitting and throwing things at his baby sister and pushing her down, but I figure that is to be expected of him at his age and dealt with patiently by his parents. He is curious, loves music, sings, has little rituals he follows in his day. He is persstent and sometimes throws tantrums.

Peanuts - he had a few peanuts at a party and I noticed a colorless rash all over him that night. That was over a week ago and he still has it. He has had peanut butter before and I didn't notice a rash. But we were at relatives home that weekend and he had a complete different diet. He's not had peanuts since.

Thanks for your interest in helping. I have no intention of going to the nebulizer unless I do it completely out of fear which I hope a homeopathic remedy will help us avoid.

I thought more about my son's personality and thought I should add some. He is a happy and friendly boy yet sometimes serious. He is busy and very active, which is why getting him down to sleep has not ever been a quick or easy thing (for me--not him). He is very social also. He likes being around other people.

Well, I read a bunch. The one I think you might try is ARSENICUM ALBUM. 200X or about. Give one dose before bed for a couple of nights to see his response. If it is right, it will be noticeable within 3 days. It doesn't match perfectly, but I feel strongly about it. Your child does not have asthma, he has a respiratory problem. This is how we think of things homeopathically.

You are doing a great job with your child. He will benefit from your wisdom.

Because of worries of allergic reactions (and the peanuts!) Get some APIS M. to have in your home. This will cover any unusual swellings from unknown sources, ie, anaphylactic shock. Parts of body swellings, especially the throat interfering with air. (life threatening) Allergic reactions to bees, etc.

I have a post with children's most common remedies listed in the forum. Give a look.

Please keep us posted. Sabra

Thanks for the suggestion Sabra. I will go get it tomorrow. I think that the store I get it at only has up to 30X so do I do it any differently if I don't find the higher dose?

Okay now I am going to add more to the mix. My 7 mo old daughter is now showing signs of a cold again. I had posted about her a couple of weeks ago about vomiting and a cold. The hepar worked well for her but I don't want to give it to her (through my breastmilk) without first finding out if my instincts are right since she had the vomiting with the pulsatillla and also on Sunday a little spitting up with teething tablets which she used to take with no problem.

If it is better for me to post this on the other thread I started to see the history, let me know.

But in bed last night I could hear that her nose was stuffed up and it was crackly sounding. It doesn't seem to be running yet. She has had colds just about every time Ben has, so I of course worry that she has the same problems as he does.

She doesn't get fevers with hers either, just a low grade below 100 as my son.

As far as her personality, she is still developing it but seems to have a calm personality. She is very smiley when she feels good. I know something is wrong when she is fussy because she is rarely just fussy without it being that she needs a diaper change or to eat or sleep.

She is still sleeping now so I will update if there is other info.

What is your son's water intake like?

PANKAJ VARMA 2 decades ago
It really varies. He sometimes will drink so much that he will urinate so much that his diaper leaks about three times in a morning. Then other days he will only drink milk. Usually the intake has to do with either warm weather or a cup that he wants to drink out of.

Lower dose ok, same dosing.

If your daughter responded well to Hepar, what makes you hesitate? You must have a reason? Are you thinking of another remedy?

Sometimes very young children take the same remedy (that works) over several times at each reoccurance of aggrivation until the problem rights itself. Unless there are new or diff symptoms.

My son took the same remedy for several years with each episode. This was the (MD) homeopath's instruction.

Keep posting. Sabra

Sabra, I hesitate because I was alarmed two weeks ago when she started vomiting after giving her the pulsitilla. Also I wasn't sure if my thinking was right as far as giving the same remedy over again when it is a different episode. Your answer clears some confusion up for me. Thanks for your help.

A question about the hepar for my daughter. Do I take the pellets as I did the first time or do I dilute the pellets in water and take one teaspoon as I did the second time?

lmhoopes 2 decades ago
Please do not be afraid. It was alarming when your daughter vomited at such a young age, but she is ok and responded to the Hepar. As she could more possibly be carrying same problem, this is somewhat like a booster to see how she responds. You are the one with the sulfa?? She needs to get over that sulfa, you need to also. It takes time.

Because she is so young, pellets in mouth are not recommended for her. Did YOU take the meds, or did you give to her? (nursing) If you plan to give to her, put two pellets in half glass of water, stir and melt. One half teaspoon is one dose. She should not need more than 3, given every two hours. If noticable improvement after 2, skip the third.

Let us know. Sabra

I ended up taking the hepar myself after supper. She is in bed now and hadn't seemed to stop having the runny nose. So I will take more when she wakes up or before I go to bed.

lmhoopes 2 decades ago
To update on my daughter, I took the hepar and it seemed to be working. I took three tablets last evening, 3 at about 11:30 and 3 this morning when I woke up.

I thought she was doing better. The runny nose seemed to clear up, but now she just vomited mostly milk and a bit of her supper again. I am really getting concerned. She doesn't throw up several times a day. It is just once every few days and she has never even been a spitty baby.

No fever.

Was a little fussy late this afternoon. I think she is a bit constipated and attributed it to that.

Any ideas? It is interesting because the doctor's office was pretty sure it is not from the sulfa. I have a hard time believing that since she was fine before then.

She is getting her two front teeth. Could that cause upset stomach?

Linda

lmhoopes 2 decades ago
Yes, it could. Teething causes a lot of different responses in children. If the vomiting is at a minumum, please do not worry. Keep liquids going to avoid dehydration. Dry diaper is good first sign.

Trying to balance and keep track of both children and yourself, is difficult, but, you must remember that babies throw up for the least cause and it is not dangerous unless there are more severe symptoms present. Be calm and watchful.

Does she have evening aggrivations?? If she does, we may think of LYCOPODIUM. This is an evening remedy for children with stomach problems-and colic. Of course, much more, but depends on your reports how to think of possible changes in remedies.

Yes, still trying to get rid of the sulpha especially in your system. It may take weeks. Allopathic Sulpha is NOT good for anyone.

If any symptoms change, let me know, we are waiting to see when or if to change the remedy. Blessings, Sabra

Sabra, I don't think of her as a baby with evening aggravations because she usually is well and happy and calm. It seems like when she has been vomiting, it has been evening twice, afternoon twice and middle of the night once. When she gets cranky with tummy aches, it is often evening but that hasn't happened for a while, several weeks.

A question about my son - He's taking the arsenicum albums and tonight he is asleep but disturbed with a dry, persistent cough. You had recommended one dose a day at night. Can he have more if he ends up waking up because of the cough?

lmhoopes 2 decades ago
Yes, but keep spread out at least two hours or more between.

Here's the thing, if it is just right and he hasn't had the remedy before, it may cause a noticable response. This is GOOD. This is why it is not given too close, so he is not uncomfortable.

Once I gave an allergy remedy and told her to take only 3 doses. She had a response and took every hour before she called me the next day. So she was mad at ME!

Just watch the activity and report. Blessings, Sabra

Just an update on my two children.

My son, today he has had watery, clear runny nose after yesterday's thick green. I think he' s getting better.

Was up for about a half hour last night coughing a dry cough, but seemed okay during day.

Daughter - watery eyes with yellow crusted around eyes and nose.

Possible stomach ache and constipated.

Nose not as runny as yesterday.

No fever.

Dry cough

I have been giving them both their medicines, dauhgter through nursing, as I see symptoms about every four hours during day.

Today my son is doing a lot better. no night coughing and only some erly morning thick greenish nose discharge. I am thinking he is over the worst of his cold, which bribgs me to another question. Can I give him something to stay healthy at least until I know the weather is staying cold?

My daughter has been coughing a dry cough today and has a stuffy crackly sounding nose. Some early morning yellowish nose discharge but mostly symptoms are coughing.

Just a comment
Silica will help children absorb milk.
Asthma is a sign of a depleted immune system and may occur if Vaccines are used.

passkey 2 decades ago
Is there a way to build the immune system for him then?

lmhoopes 2 decades ago
Your children do not have asthma. He has a night cough that may have gotton worse, but now shows signs of improvement.

I do not advocate silicea for young children.

Your healthy habits are giving more to your children than most parents. If you wish to add something, Get children's B-complex drops as a vit addition. (from health store)

There are remedies to give children for health like the vaccines. Depending on the time of the year we could speak of it. You are doing well right now.

The influenza remedy is good for the flu season. Look under the posting on flu. There are a dozen or more flu type remedies according to the symptoms. Even the Ars Alb is used for a type of flu symptom. Hepar sulph too, matching certain symptoms.

Some remedies will come in a package of several tubes. It says to take the entire tube as a dose--NOT! The dose is a few grains as any other remedy. This is to insure you buy again. Two years ago they were $6.99, now they are $15. It is called marketing for Mo' Money.

Do not be fearful, your children will pick up on it. Blessings, Sabra
