Dog with persistant abscess in gums
My dog is in a lot of pain... I'd really like to help her. I have some experience diagnosing myself and my children, but I am at a loss with a dog since they can't talk. She has had three teeth removed in the last month in an attempt to get rid of the abscess. She is finished her antibiotics tomorrow, the last surgery was a week ago and the abscess shows no signs of going down. She is still in fairly good spirits, eating, somewhat playful. The abscess is on her left side.It is bright red, if you open her mouth it will gush blood/pus. It is darker in the middle. She has some warmth on that side of her head, in the area of the abscess. She seems to be in pain in the evenings, laying and whining a bit. Drinks some water, I would not say a lot, still has an appetite. I suspect the infection is deep.. either in her bone or perhaps in a sinus. The first tooth that was removed was cracked, very rotten and had been festering a long time. If a remedy is suggested, could you please recommend a dose as well? Thank-you.rheemeryck on 2009-05-01

I am not a homeopath, but there is a remedy often mentioned as being specifically for abscesses: pyrogenium. One book I have calls it 'The Homeopathic Antibiotic' and 'Abscesses' is the short use shown on the label of the bottle I have. I've personally used pyrogenium 30C for a tooth abscess with good results.
I'd do the same thing for a dog I'd do for an abcess I had: make a wet dose in a 500 ml. bottle of purified or spring water. Pour out an inch of so of the water, add three pills or three drops of the pyrogenium.
If using pills, once dissolved, bang on your palm eight or ten times and give the dog one teaspoon of the remedy. You can bang the remedy on your palm again and repeat the remedy in an hour or so, and repeat that procedure several more times the first day using the remedy.
If it's going to work, you should see some improvement within 24 hours or sooner. If better, give other doses as before once or twice a day until the healing seems well underway.
Many use the wet dose exclusively, and it seems a good way to get a dose into any animal.

I am going to look for that remedy tomorrow... I have been doing more research adn I am going to try CALCAREA SULFURICA tonight and tomorrow first... she seems to fit some of the description for that remedy as well. Thank-you for the reply, it's good to get feedback when someone has used a remedy!

I have been giving her the merc s, have not seen any change yet, but she is not worse. Should I be concerned if a peice of the rotten tooth root was left behind? I was thinking maybe that's a potential cause of why this is happening. If that's the case, will she be able to fight this off on her own with homeopathic help?

Well, give her mouthwash of Calendola-Q (100 drops in a glass of water thrice a day) and use the following medicine:
Calendola-200 (5 drops per dose twice a day)
Myrestica-200 (5 drops per dose thrice a day) and report after one week
But no other medicine during the course of treatment.

I have been giving her merc s 30C (4 pills dissolved in a water solution, 3-4 drops at a time after succession) 4X daily, as was suggested.
I'm appreciative of the suggestions given here, but there is not any discussion as to why I should give her the Calendola and myrestica vs the Mercurius... I do not have calendola or mysterica and will have to order them. Is there any particular reason why I should be giving her those remedies over the Merc S.?? What are the symptoms that suggest those rememdies? Thanks

Dr. Mahfooz has suggested calendula and myristica. i think these would have been appropriate for a regular wound or abscess but here merc. is indicated. You may wait for his clarification.

I am unable to find calendola... I'm guessing it would be Calendula Off.?? Also, Where would I find Calendola Q?? Thanks

In addition, consider giving 500mg of Vitamin C twice a day. Wheatgrass,one teaspoon every twelve hours. It can be mixed into the food. Grapefruit seed extract-15 drops twice a day mixed into some moist food. GSE is very bitter and potent and is always to be either diluted or mixed in the food.
A mixture of 35% food-grade hydrogen peroxide diluted 80/20 with boiled(then cooled) water to which 2-3 drops of GSE has been added -squirted into the mouth several times a day is very disinfecting and healing for this type of thing.It will foam as it is doing its job.
Apis is also used for abcesses with much success.
