Thyroid - weight gain and hair loss, and living in Asia

I desperately need some help here. I am a 22-year-old college student in China. While I was up north here about 3 years ago, I went hypothyroid. I was living in a rather remote village, so I started putting on weight and losing hair with no idea of what was causing it. Though I finally figured it out when I went back to the West to visit, I felt like I was doing battle against the doctors and clinicians just to get them to treat me, and I had very little time before I came back to Asia. Without several months of tests, they would not give me a perscription, and I was feeling awful, putting on weight faster than the doctor said was "possible", forgetting things, you know the story.

So, I spurned the medical industry, did my own research, and ordered T3/4 from a country where the laws are nowhere near as stringent. I immediately felt better, though certain problems have not been solved. I am back in China now, and I have to get my medications shipped in. And now for my point:

My hair will not stop falling out. I used to have a head of hair I could yank a brush through, and now every time I touch it, I come away with several strands. I've lost probably about 1/8 of my hair so far. When I'm on a lower dosage of thyroid medication, the hairloss is continual, but not so heavy. However, the lower dosage is not enough to keep me feeling healthy and at a steady weight. When I raise the dosage, my hair falls out more rapidly.

I'd like to find some homeopathic remedies that are available in China for hair loss, nothing with fancy names and titles. They know very very little about hypo/hyperthyroidism here, so I'll have to grab something that's not only used for this purpose. Does anyone have any herb names that I could hunt down that I might be able to use as supplements?

Thanks

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
if the hypothyroid is due to lack of iodine kelp supplement is helpful. But not all thyroid problems are helped by this.

Hi I have recently moved from Australia to Hong Kong I am a 25 year old female and I am having the exact same problem. I not living anywhere remote of course but I connot work out why my hair is falling out and I am gaining weight. What causes thyroid problems? Is there something missing from my diet? Can the thyroid fix itself? If anyone knows anything I would be so grateful.

Hi, I experienced the same when moving from Singapore to UK, weight gain, depression, fatigue, memory loss but no hair loss. I suspected thyroid malfunction, TSH was up to 10.I am not keen on synthetic thyroid so am exploring other options. Now TSH down to 4 which is still too high but better. Reading your stories I can't help but feel that stress can be a BIG factor.

There are some good sites on the internet. Look for Mary Shomon, Dr. Barry Peatfield. 'Stop the thyroid madness' is another site. Look up nutrition and supplements for hypothyroidism, I found a great site, must look for it and re-post.
The right foods, supplements depending on your needs, some herbs, and YOGA asanas to stimulate the gland (plough, fish) can really help. Candida, heavy metal and other pollution can attack thyroid and cause autoimmune thyroiditis.
Detoxification with topical clay poultices may help. Green vegetable juices, seaweed. Exercise, sunshine, happiness.Maybe more protein and zinc. Adrenal fatigue and exhaustion, also emotional, can drain the thyroid.
Ginseng, Kelp, ashwaghanda, bee pollen, maca (I eat this like a food). Enough natural vitamins, selenium, fatty acids. No sugar and stimulants.
Express yourself, live your dreams (5th chakra is thyroid). Learn Emotional Freedom technique. (free at www.emofree.com)
Reflexology can really help, too.
Learn Jin Shin Jyutsu. One exercise for thyroid: Place right hand on top of head, left hand over thyroid area. Feel the flow of energy.

If you take thyroid hormone and are not happy with the results, try natural thyroid from bovine or porcine source which may work much better for some people.

I am ready to try homeopathy for this again, have not had much success with it so far but I believe the remedy is out there!
