The ABC Homeopathy Forum
sepia or causticum
I went to go see my homeopath and was sure I had all the symptoms of a causticum. It seemed to be a perfect fit. However, the homeopath claimed that I was in fact a sepia. I'm still no sure I agree. I don't have a bridge or patches across my nose. I'm a brunette, but blue eyed. Taking this remedy before seemed to bring about brown patches on my skin that haven't gone away and I', concerned if I take more it will only get worse.mnstrm on 2010-10-16

How had Sepia affected your other symptoms. How many doses of Sepia you have taken and in which potency?

I just ended up feeling worse with no relief. I was kept on it for a while with the anticipation that I would get over the hump. I didn't so we ended up stopping. Now approx. 10 months later, that's what I've been prescribed again.

Well it could be an issue with the potency - 6c and 12c are very low. If there are any specific peculiars or mental symptoms associated with Sepia it is possible those potencies are just too low. Giving too low a potency may do nothing, or may create a mild agitation of the symptoms without creating enough to cause the healing reaction.
On the other hand, what reason did the practitioner give for persisting with a treatment that wasn't working? As a patient that is what I would want to know. Did you tell them you thought you needed Causticum? I have found that telling homoeopaths you know your own remedy tends to hurt their egos, and they can then persist with unsuccessful remedies for this reason (not nice to hear but it happens).
Personally, if a patient insists they need a particular remedy, and nothing I am doing is working, then I see no reason not to give it to them. At best, it will cure them. At worst, they will see it won't. It's a positive either way.

completely agree on the ego part. I try to be sensitive about that. Yes I told them it wasn't working and making me worse, yet they insisted that it would be fine.
In your opinion should a remedy worsen your original symptoms? I thought that it would bring up minimal remenance of prior symptoms, but not worsen current symptoms.

Personally I think you should challenge any decision which is purely stroking a homoeopath's ego. That is not what we are there for - to be the 'one-in-charge'. The highest goal of the homoepath *should* be to cure the sick, not be the smart guy.
In my experience a medicine will most likely aggravate current symptoms. If the dose is too large that aggravation will be very marked.
If the remedy is the Simillimum (the perfect remedy or closest to it we have), then old symptoms will usually reoccur. This is a particularly excellent sign and bodes very well for the patient. It is not uncommon to see both old and current symptoms flare up under treatment with the Simillimum.
Aggravation of current symptoms can be positive, but it can also be meaningless in reference to the 'rightness' of the remedy. Current symptoms can aggravate for lots of reasons. In fact current symptoms aggravate naturally, since that is why the patient has come to us in the first place.
