Recent onset of Panic attacks while driving?
Hi all,I am a 46 year old female and over the last year have been having panic attacks while driving. I didn't know what they were when the first one happened and actually thought something else was going on.
It started on the highway, I noticed I was getting a little dizzy then my heart would start racing and I would get dizzy and feel like I was going to pass out. So I would avoid the highway and take side streets.
Then over time, it started to happen when I was at a traffic light, especially in the left hand turn lane.
Now, I can't seem to go drive myself anywhere without feeling like I will have an attack.
When I first had this happen a year ago, I cut out all caffeine, artificial sweeteners and started changing my diet because I felt it was some how related to something I was putting in my body or NOT putting in. I started eating healthier as well.
However, the panic attacks now have crossed over to mild ones when I am in the grocery store. I don't drive myself so a friend takes me but this past weekend when I was grocery shopping I had a mild attack and almost walked out.
This whole thing has really disrupted my life and I want to get back to living normally again.
I will also tell you that I used to think Panic attacks were fake. NOT ANYMORE. I never have been a restless or uptight person, but I do have a tendency to hold my anxiety inside.
Has anyone else had this same experience and what did you do to treat it?
I have learned that it could be hormones, and recently hear Dr. John Grey mention Lithium Orotate may help so that is on order.
I have GABA, B12, Omegas, and a few other things that I have been taking with no changes.
Anything additional would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Read the book 'waking the tiger' it explains all about panic attacks.
Please fill out Reva's form she will find a remedy for your mental and physical totality.
Some women start to get something like this when they are in peri menopause.
Either that or something went on with you before the first one and you had
a scary thought to do with something traumatic.
In the above scenario-you have the thought which can be like a micro second.
the thought then starts the flight or fight syndrome off having the reptile brain
hijack the cerebral cortex and cut off blood flow- so it is just this physical reaction
that overtakes you. If this is the case to do with some trauma or thought-you work
on desensitizing yourself ( see the book about therapist qualifications)
Bc you see how it then spreads- you have one at a traffic light- then think

I also just remembered two other relatives whose
root cause of panic attacks had to do with their teeth.
One person got sick eating out- then every time
she went to eat out and had the smallest twinge
she would be fighting off panic. She started only
eating at home. A random dental check up let her
find out a wisdom tooth needed to be extracted and
after the extraction, her body just did not go
into an anxiety state when she went out to eat.
The other person was highly stressed and nervous,
having mini panic attacks when she had to use
extra energy to do something new at work. She had
a hidden gum infection on a root canal. When that
was taken care of then -no more anxiety went on
and she was her usual self bc her body was not
fighting off something.
You can see if these people did not find out about
this , their quality of life and self esteem was

One thing I will also mention is that when I am on the highway, it feels like I am driving in a tunnel. I feel off balance a little and that seems to heighten the tendency to panic.
I know this sounds weird, but the days when I have been super tired, I don't seem to have the panic on the road as much. But when I am alert and awake it seems more apparent that it could happen.
Self esteem is definitely an issue, which is why I am working on getting off weight and getting healthier and in shape. I know that if I look better I will feel better about myself so I am on the right track there.
I also agree from what I have read that Peri-menopause may have an impact, which is why I started trying to figure out how the hormones affected this. That is the closest I have been so far.
I have a group of friends on another forum who all have reported similar things happening in middle age as well which made me think it has to do with hormones in some way.
Everything normal, then one day POOF! And the panic attack comes out of nowhere. Doesn't make any sense.
All I know, is I am wanting to get back to normal life. Today is actually a good weather day and I may just try to take a drive and see how it goes and how I feel.

I get sad a lot because I am trying to hard to lose weight but it doesn't budge, and I truly do not eat the calories needed to gain, but I still can't seem to get the weight off.

perimenopause really well- I had mine
done by Nurse practioner who also
was a naturo path and she had
excellent advice on the perimenopause.
2. Get a physical done - see if your
white count blood cells are
elevated at all- meaningis there
some infection going on
you are not aware of and just
make sure everything is in order.
You need to rule out the above,
bc as I mentioned the two other
people could have spent a year in
therapy etc for something that
was a physical issue not a mental issue.

Medicines is one critical element and is very important for cure, but cannot be complete without others, including nutrional changes (and food intake), simple life habit changes and most importantly excersise that has track record of helping panic attack patients. I will write you later what my other patients shared with me that is found to be working for them.
Yes, get your blood profile done to rule out any obvious one. Dental check by a holistic doctor in your area can be of help.
Please buy Argentum Nitricum 30c, Spigelia 30c and Rescue Remedy. I am sure arg nit and Rescue remedy are available in the local health food stores in US, but not sure about Spigelia.

I read your blog and felt like it was written about me. I too had driving anxiety and panic attacks. also it happened in the grocery store and continued in other stores.
How are you doing now and have you battled your episodes yet? if so, how did you do it. I still have panic attacks from time to time and my action is 'flight'.....its awful and has caused me to miss out on some family fun times. I've also now had to deal with claustrophia....which is the worst...!!!!

I have been having panic attacks since 1999 while driving. It came on all of a sudden. I have been on interstate with fearful anxiety a couple of times. My hands sweat, feel like i am going to lose control of vehicle, i envision my car flipping over to the left, I get so scared, i pull off the side of the road numerous times. Sometimes I really feel like I am just going to blackout. I am a RN and I deal with this everytime I get in my car. I have been so scared at a large intersection before that I have almost put on emergency brake and got out of the car. I try breathing techniques or whatever I can do to keep from fainting. Its making me physically sick and miserable. It's been 14 years now. A lot of times I just won't leave the house because the anxiety starts before I shower to go somewhere & just escalates from there. I know it is hard to understand. I just can't take anymore.

to the first one you had. What went on? What were you thinking, and did you have

Here is how this works-
At the first one you could have had some physical, tiny issue arise. Then your mind
will go to a scary thought, what is this, am I having a _______ fill in the blank. Or you had some other scary thought.The
thought can be a split second thought, but is enough to trigger the fight or flight
reptilian brain over- ride on your system. Then , blood flow is cut down to the
front cognitve, logical brain, bc your mind thinks something is an emergency.
If it was a real emergency, the logical , front brain is going to be to slow to keep
you alive, so the body shuts it down and floods you with adrenaline. When there
is no logical reason to flee or fight , the panic attack is just the surge of adrenaline
with nothing to use it for.
What happens after this, is people become afraid of the panic itself and then associate
wherever the panic went on with that activity. All the senses in a panic attack are
recorded in a different way- with extra wiring so that if a similar activity starts-
driving- then you go into a hyper-alert state. You help to escalate this by doing
'what if' I have another one today thoughts, which activate the emotional brain-
amygdala and the wiring set up from there to the fight or flight mechanism. Studies
have shown that people with panic have extra neuron set ups around the amygdala
to wire this entire set up and this is due to how memories are stored differently in
panic - high adrenaline situations.
One thing you can do, is have someone help desensitize you- to put in different
memories over and over. So you have a calm person come over and get in the car
with you and then just drive around the block. Over and over and then drive a little
further over and over-the more you understand the physical part of this , the more
you can stay in the front brain and get that taking charge, instead of going into
the over- ride. And refuse to do the what if thoughts, which will be hard at first,
but it is new habit and takes time.

Here is how this works-
At the first one you could have had some physical, tiny issue arise. Then your mind
will go to a scary thought, what is this, am I having a _______ fill in the blank. Or you had some other scary thought.The
thought can be a split second thought, but is enough to trigger the fight or flight
reptilian brain over- ride on your system. Then , blood flow is cut down to the
front cognitve, logical brain, bc your mind thinks something is an emergency.
If it was a real emergency, the logical , front brain is going to be to slow to keep
you alive, so the body shuts it down and floods you with adrenaline. When there
is no logical reason to flee or fight , the panic attack is just the surge of adrenaline
with nothing to use it for.
What happens after this, is people become afraid of the panic itself and then associate
wherever the panic went on with that activity. All the senses in a panic attack are
recorded in a different way- with extra wiring so that if a similar activity starts-
driving- then you go into a hyper-alert state. You help to escalate this by doing
'what if' I have another one today thoughts, which activate the emotional brain-
amygdala and the wiring set up from there to the fight or flight mechanism. Studies
have shown that people with panic have extra neuron set ups around the amygdala
to wire this entire set up and this is due to how memories are stored differently in
panic - high adrenaline situations.
One thing you can do, is have someone help desensitize you- to put in different
memories over and over. So you have a calm person come over and get in the car
with you and then just drive around the block. Over and over and then drive a little
further over and over-the more you understand the physical part of this , the more
you can stay in the front brain and get that taking charge, instead of going into
the over- ride. And refuse to do the what if thoughts, which will be hard at first,
but it is new habit and takes time.

I have had panic attacks just like yours! It just kept getting worse. It turned out to be estrogen dominance. I was given progesterone supplements and it is as if I am a new person! No panic attacks. I have not tried driving on the highway yet.

and found there is a physical cause- that
should always be done.
You may find you are nervous driving the first
few times if this happened before, even
if you are well with progesterone- the brain
remembers past incidents and it sometimes
takes a few experiences where things do NOT
happen for anticipatory anxiety to fade away.
