infant constipation
Hello,My 45 days old boy has congenital hypothyroidism. his bowel movements are very infrequent as a result of that. he is on hormone replacement treatment with thyronorm 37.5 microgram daily, but still no stool. had to give him glycerine suppository 2-3 times every 5-6 days. stool was of muddy constituency, brown in colour. he strains and cramps stomach muscles, clenches hands and feet, cries out loudly in effort to pass stool, but nothing happens. he is also very gassy and cries with pain almost all day, mostly in the evening. only decolic drops gives him relief. but he stays calm on days i give him suppository to help bowel movement. is there any medicine to cure his lack of bowel movement? I can no longer bear to see his pain. please help.

This is just a forum. Assume posts are not from medical professionals.
Nat Phos 6x helps to stimulate Peristalsis and you can give him a tablet after every feed dissolved in a little milk or water and observe if it helps his constipation.
His case is very special as you state that he suffers from Congenital Hypothyroidism and is on hormone replacement therapy.
Nat Phos 6x usually works with infants to help with settling reflux and it would be interesting to observe if your baby's constipation can also be helped.

Thank you so much for your advice. I have started giving him NP. 3 doses have been given so far, no bowel movement so far. Shall report progress after 48 hrs. Could you please suggest, whether to give the medicine in a dropper or in a spoon? I am from India.

Dear Joe De Livera,
I have given the medicine, but no bowel movements yet. My baby's tummy feels hot to touch, but he is not running a temperature as checked by thermometer. He also suffers from bouts of colic pain, after feedings, once in the morning and again in the evening. He strains to pass stool every morning and also every now and then throughout the day. He passes gas. But no stool yet. When the colic pain sets in he cries out very loudly, his face turns very red. he clenches his fists and thrashes his legs. massaging his tummy with castor oil, carrying him on the shoulder and walking around seems to help a little. Pain subsides a while after giving gripe water, or in extreme cases, Decolic drops. It seems his gas formation is due to not passing stool. As a last resort yesterday I gave him Duphalac (lactulose) 2.5 ml. Still nothing. I do not want my baby to be dependant on laxatives. I myself have been taking tissue salts for over 2 years now and have been immensely benefitted. But it does not seem to be working for my baby. What to do now? Also, instead of aloepathic med, can I give him some homeo remedy for his colic pain, like Colocynth or Chamomilla or Diascoria? If so, what dose?

Your baby's problem with GERD and Reflux is complicated by his congenital hypothyroidism and we can only hope that the Nat Phos 6x therapy can help him. We started him on the NP therapy 3 days ago and I would suggest that you keep on with this therapy instead of changing over to the therapy suggested by my colleague. If my therapy does not work you can then use the Glycerine sticks and if his body does not take over you can then stop my therapy and change over to the other.
Nat Phos 6x is absolutely harmless and can be used by both adults and babies very safely.
In any event DO NOT USE both therapies.

Dear R.P. Tamhankar
Thanks for your advice but these medicines are not readily available in my area, I have placed an order for these but frankly I am a little scared of using such highly specific medicines... what if something goes wrong? My baby is only 1and a half months old after all. Meanwhile I am continuing with Nat Phos. 6X because it looks like it is helping with his gas problem.
Regards,
Sebanti

Dear Joe De Livera
I would like to report it to you that Nat. Phos 6X seems to have worked to some extent with my baby. After my last post I had to give him Neopeptine on the prescription of my pediatrician, but as soon as I stopped Neopeptine he stopped regular bowel movements. Then I started giving him Nat. Phos 6x again. He now passes stool once in 2-3 days without the aid of any Duphalac or Neopeptine. I fail to give him Nat. Phos after every feed because sometimes he falls asleep. But I definitely give it to him 3 times every day, have been doing this on a regular basis since the last 7 days.
How long should I continue giving him Nat Phos? also, how many times a day is a must? Please help.

Glad to learn that my Nat Phos 6x therapy has helped your baby in the same manner that it has helped over 250 babies whom I have treated with my therapy aka 'Joepathy' which is a term coined by the classical homeopathic community, as I do not abide by the standard classical rules as the classical remedies invariably do not cure the patient.
The great advantage of Nat Phos is that it is absolutely safe in use even on a daily basis, and you can safely give him up to 4 tablets daily as this remedy will also help his constipation. I presume that you are breast feeding him and you are advised to take 2 tablets Nat Phos 6x thrice daily as it will pass over to him in your milk. It will also reduce your weight by 1kg per week.
You can give the NP to him for as long as as you feel that he needs it. There are no hard and fast rules on how long you must give it to him.

It is best not to confuse the mother with your remedies as you have already read her report that my Nat Phos 6x therapy has helped her baby.
You may like to know that I too prescribe Nux V 30c in the Wet dose to supplement the Nat Phos, but only if the NP does not work as it usually does when relief is shown by baby in a few minutes after the first dose. I prefer not to prescribe Nux V as we are treating a baby and there is some remote possibility of side effects. I do not prescribe Bryonia as I do not consider it relevant.
I am often surprised as to the reason why classical homeopaths refuse to use Nat Phos 6x as I invariably do for GERD and presume that they do so as this remedy is not referred to in the classical textbooks they used in college. In my case I am not a qualified homeopath although I have studied this science since 1965 and have practiced it free of charge for the last 25 years to help anyone in distress who comes to me for help.
