Hi Guys I am a 24 year old woman with the same problem. I have been getting a recurring Bartholin cyst since June 2006( this year). It has come back 5 times since June. I am stressed out and fed up. I wish there was something I could buy or do to premanently prevent this from occuring. Help please, Help. I rely on the ER because I am currently without health insurance. Is there any proven home remedies that I could practice...Just please Help...

Thank god I found all of you! No one understands the pain i have EVERY month! My bartholin issues started in 2005. I had them monthly right after my period. I would either go to the ER, or the doctors office to pop them. Or I would just let it get so big it popped on its own. I did do the marsipulazation surgery which worked from July 2005 until September 2006. Now I am back to where started from. My doctor does not want to do another surgery to take it out because he said it could cause more problems in the long run. One problem being that I could have extremly painful sex for the rest of my life. I am trying to get pregnant which is hard when there is a constant golf ball in my crotch! If anyone has any helpful tips I wipuld love to hea them. As for taking baths, I don't feel like that does anything except make it bigger.

Some two years ago, my wife developed a Bartholin's cyst. Of course, most of what you find during research on the internet is somewhat discouraging. If you can find the following article: “Visco AG, Del Priore G. Postmenopausal bartholin gland enlargement: a hospital-based cancer risk assessment. Obstet Gynecol 1996;87:286-90, it might be useful. In our case, surgical removal of the cyst under general anesthesia was done and after a couple of months of healing, there were no further problems or complications, no loss of sexual function or other adverse effects. Obviously, you will want to seek out a good surgeon with experience in this area.

I've been dealing with these damn things for roughly 3 years now. The first time I had no idea it would become an abcess since no one told me when I called to make appts at the doctors office. It was soooooo big and painful...I mean I literally had a third labea it was so big!! I had a marcupialization the first time the next couple times had it lanced once it popped while I was sleeping....thank GOD! and had to go in a handful of other times as well the last being about a year ago...a tube was placed for 2 weeks and couldnt sit down for close to one full week! The other problem is there are hardly any doctors that can see me when I need to be seen. I too feel like sits baths often make it worse unless I've caught it before one side is bigger than the other. Hi, I had a Bartholin cyst and used a combination of conventional medicine and natural treatments to heal it. I want to share my experience here and if you have another Bartholin cyst forum you would like to copy to, feel free.

I was 29 when this happened. I first noticed discomfort and dismissed it as a pimple but in a few days, it became a distinct pea size lump to the right and behind the vaginal opening. A few days later, I woke up and it became almost cherry size. I got a walk-in Dr's appointment and found out it was a Bartholin cyst. I had the choice to excise on the spot, wait, or take antibiotics and wait (for chance that it could be infection related). I opted for the antibiotics in case it was infection, and also to prevent infection. The first 2 days after diagnosis I just did warm water sitz bath 3-4 times a day.
*side note* I did not own an actual sitz bath so I used my bath tub, in which warm water gets cool very fast, so I filled it mostly hot water and let it cool just enough to as hot as I could take it, again, it will cool fairly quickly.
Still not working, I did about 1 day of epsom salt in the sitz baths, nothing. 3rd day or so I got some comfrey herb (put in an old stocking or something - easier to cleanup). Another 2 days and no change, and I was scheduled for my followup, and was planning to get the dang thing cut! Lo and behold, I woke up that morning and it seemed to have drained, strange, I didn't find any fluid on my underwear. I went anyway to my followup, just to get it checked and happy to not need the procedure. To my dismay, the Dr. still thought I should do a procedure. First he squeezed out any fluid he could, then i had 2 local anesthetic via needles down there (ouch!) then he slit the openingn further to help it stay open and prevent re-blockage. He then inserted a stringy piece of fabric into the duct, to help drainage, like a wick. I was cleared to go back to work the same day, but I took the rest of the day off, because it hurt (not a lot) and I didn't want to move around so much and have the wick fall out early. I continued sitz baths (with comfrey) for about 3 days. The wick fell out in the bath within a day. It's been almost a year now and I not had a recurrence (knock on wood). Hope this story can give some insight to someone searching for information.

We were planning for a child from 6-7 months. And this year 2010 in the month of March, I faced 3 problems one after another. Firstly, I missed my due period by 16 days ( though I was not pregnant). Secondly, I got Vaginal infection -Vulvovaginitis (due to which there was foul smell discharge from my vagina with itching ) and Thirdly, I developed a painless lump on my left labia near Vagina which my Doctor told me is Bartholin Gland Cyst.

I have had a cyst for seven years. It has never hurt or been large enough to cause problems.

I first noticed the cyst about a year ago after sex. I didn’t know what it was and researched online and found out it was a bartholin gland cyst. I don’t have health insurance b/c I am a student. However, I went to the free women’s clinic at my university and the nurse practitioner confirmed that it was a bartholin gland cyst and thankfully not infected. Here’s the problem though, the swelling goes down with sitz baths or on it’s own after a few days but everytime I have sex it comes back, to which the nurse practitioner responded “hhmm… that’s very interesting.” Not at all a great answer. In order to see the actual gynecologist I have to pay and I cannot afford it. Also I have a phobia of needles and medical procedures in general and after reading all the horror stories online am even more afraid. I bought the Silica pills and have been taking them for about 3 weeks, they started to help, when it got swollen it was less severe than usual, but tonight it swelled up to about golf ball size or a little larger and is causing discomfort again. I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar problem with it swelling after sex everytime and then draining for almost a year b/c I have not heard of a similar case and neither has the nurse practitioner.

I just had mine drained in the ER yesterday after dealing with it on & off for 8-9 years. Mine also flares up every time I have sex, and condom use seems to worsen the problem. I will try the silica pills for maintenance - thanks for the advice!

So, I googled how to take care of these darn things and found all you folks! There are a lot of things worse then this, but when you are dealing with it...IT SUCKS! I have been dealing with this for a few years now! The first time it was just drained. Stay dormant, but there since then. Now that I have divorced and have started seeing a man quite larger then my ex...now there are problems! It had gotten infected, which started obviously before the new guy! But it was really bad. I was in the hospital for four days with fever and antibiotics and a marcipulation (however you spell that)and a month later, just healed and now it's back. I tried to regain my new sex life and now it's back to a ping pong ball size. The lump never totally went away. The doctor said she poked at it and tried to drain it and nothing comes out but that lump is still there and now the swelling over it. I was fine when we didn't use a condom, but as soon as we did...here it comes! I too found that the condom really irritated the healed tissue and is having a latex itchy sensation. I'm tired of having the lingering doom of surgery again to have it removed. My doctor is saying that is the next option. So, I've been looking up complications and so on. Hi, I'm 33years old and I've been having bartholin cysts for nearly 2 years now. I've gone through the marsuplization and still it keeps coming. I haven't been having sex and still it's there. Now, I'm taking silica complex once a day as an alternative. I'm not sure on how many to take a day because on the bottle it says one pill a day. I'm so depressed and if I think about it, I just feel that my life is over. Is there anything else that can cure this? I just want it to go away .. HELP

Hi, reading this forum I have found out so many things and it has reassured me a lot.

I am 16 years old, and about two years ago I found a hard whitish lump at the opening of my vagina, I must have been fourteen at the time and absolutely petrified to go to the doctor and my Mum and I don't have a good relationship so I told no one, and now I am sixteen and in the exact same situation, only I think there might be another lump forming.

My lump is extremely uncomfortable when touched and itches a lot from time to time, today I think I accidentally made it bleed? I decided to do some research and stumbled across the definition of a Bartholin Cyst, which seems to exactly describe what is happening to me! After reading some stories it is quite clear mine is not that serious, it has always stayed the size of a pea and stayed exactly the same for at least two years, however I do get anxious about it. I still haven't gone to the Doctors about it as I am just simply too embarrassed!

I'm not quite sure what my next step is, it doesn't sound serious to need it drained, but it has stayed the same for two whole years, why has it not popped? I am unsure of what to do now, I would appreciate it greatly if anyone could advise me on what to do, I am 17 in a couple of months and I am extremely embarrassed to go to the doctors, although if I 100% need to I guess I can muster up the courage.

Hello I'm Faith, I'm 20 years old and married. I've been with my husband for a year and 3 months. In May I felt a small lump on my labia, I had no idea what it was neither did my husband. We assumed it was a boil and got medication for boil pain relief. Unfortunately, we were terribly mistaken and it actually became much worse in the passing days. Until finally I couldn't stop crying from the pain. We rushed to the ER and they diagnosed it as a Bartholin gland cyst absess. They drained it (which was extremely painful, the local aneasthesia did not work whatsoever). Prior to it i was completely healthy, absolutely no major problems or stress. They made an incision and put 'packing' in it to absorb any fluids that may have remained. Finished an entire prescription of percocet in 2 days, I have very low pain tolerance. My husband was holding my hand throughout the whole procedure and even took off from work to make sure I healed well.

Now it is August and it has come back, I detected it early and immediately looked for at home remedies. Since i have no insurance and we are still paying off the previous hospital bill. I found this site and have been taking silica 3 times a day for the past 5 days. I'm not sure exactly what I'm supposed to expect at this point. It has gotten much bigger, about the size of a ping pong ball, and has gotten increasingly painful. I'm hoping it will pop today, but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to pop it myself or if it will do it on its own. I have also been taking warm baths with epsom salt for half an hour every night. Thank God for this site. I have suffered from a reoccuring Bartholin cyst absess for the past 6 years. It has been terrible. Having to go to the ER over and over with no insurance. I am swimming in a sea of debt thanks to my visits, and what really upset me about it was that they never offered a permanent fix. They could never tell me why I was getting them. It was so frustrating, leaving the ER with a huge bill, knowing I'd be back within the year to go thru it again. The local anesthetic was a complete joke but the last few times I was there they gave me an IV with morphine and I didn't cry as much... When I read about the silica, I was skeptical to say the least. But, at the same time, I was desperate to try anything. Reading the bottle it said it was a laxative, but the owner of the store looked it up in a homeopathy book and it can be used for many things. Reoccuring infections were one of the things it was supposed to help as well. The ones I got are labeled Silicae 30C. It says I can take 1-3 pills up to 3 times a day. You don't take the pills with water. You let them dissolve under your tongue so the medicine gets into your system. I have been taking 1 pill a day for a week and am AMAZED to say that I can no longer feel the absess. It's like it just went away. I can't tell you what a relief I feel. Or maybe I can. Anyone who gets these absesses know how terrible they are. I have to agree with sex-addict married young girl...I do enjoy having sex. I am 33 years old, and have been dealing with these cysts since age 15. They started on the right labia, and the first 2 or 3 would pop by themselves. I would call my gyno and get a prescription for an anitbiotic just to be safe. Then I got two when I was pregnant with my 2nd daughter. I had the first one for a little over a week, I tried everything to get it to pop on it's own. I had to have that one lanced open. OMG...that (for lack of a better word) sucked! I also had a Word Cath put in, which didn't stay and fell out a day later. Three months into my pregnancy I got another one. This time I had a surgery scheduled for a cervical cerclage, so she did the cerclage and fixed my gland at the same time. I haven't had a problem with the right labia since.

Now it has moved to my left labia. I just got my most recent one to pop on it's own yesturday. Mine get about as wide as a golf ball and about as long as a tampon. They usually stay for about a week before I either have to have them lanced or they drain on their own. I am working part time so this time I was able to take sitz baths. I put my portable DVD player in the bathroom and sat in them for 2 hours at a time, for 4 days, once a day. I also bought baby wipes. I then found this website and read about the silicea. I went to an all natural store in my area and bought it. I hope it works. I dont want another surgery. But, I haven't had a problem with my right labia since my surgery.

For the ladies that are confused about which calcium and silica to use here is what I've used that has worked for me...Use can take regular horsetail silica at three time the potency meaning if the bottle says one a day you will take three pills a day and three different times a day ALONG WITH a Calcium Citrate + vitamin D WITH MAGNESIUM which can be can be purchased at CVS pharmacy in the United States. Just so you know which Calcium I'm talking about here are the ingredients.

Now these same ingredients can be found in a Silica COMPLEX but fro my understanding some ladies were having issues finding Silica Complex in stores and I found this at my local drug store...

I am currently only taking this Calcium vitamin D with magnesium twice a day by itself and it has done more good for my cyst than two weeks of silica. So if you can only find immediate access to CALCIUM+VITAMIN D WITH MAGNESIUM then this should work just fine. My cyst is half it's size after only one dose of the Calcium. Drink plenty water and be prepared to abstain from sex for at least three weeks during the course of the treatment.
