235 thousand replies!!! Has a class action suit been filed yet??? I am furious over what this drug put me through. Here's my story.
I have a history of 12 years on Prozac, which I went off in 2000 after divorcing one of the main causes (slight humor there for a very serious matter, sorry).
In 2004, at 44 years of age, I started to notice a lot of agitation that was difficult to control. After discussing it with my doctor, we agreed it was perimenopause related and he suggested Effexor. I was prescribed 75mg. After about three months I went back to tell him I was having headaches. He said the dosage needed to be increased, so he put me on 150 mg XR. There I stayed until February 8th of this year.
Two things make my story unique from what I've read so far. One is that I had horrible 'brain zaps,' dizziness, intolerance to sound, and the feeling like my eyes and brain were moving in different directions DURING the course of taking the drug. It occurred every month right before my cycle, so must have been hormone induced.
I have a family history of migraines so thought I was experiencing a migraine although I could not find any accounts of a migraine describing the brain zaps. In any event, the good doc. prescribed Relpac, a migraine that met the description of mine. He continued to prescribe it even though there are documented risks of Serotonion Syndrome, a potentially toxic side effect of mixing an SRRI with a migraine drug. Each time I filled the Relpac RX my pharmacist would warn me and I would assure him/er that I only took one or two per month. If I caught it early enough, the Relpac helped, but not always. These events were so distressful and I so worried I would get one when I had a big meeting, presentation, or other, that I couldn't risk not having the migraine medication with me at all times.
The other element that makes my story unique is my withdrawal experience. The migraines (so I thought) were getting worse and were really scaring me. I thought I was losing my mind and would cry for two days because of the disorientation and general sense of feeling like I couldn't get out of bed. I thought I had a brain tumor or other neurologic disorder. At my yearly exam my GYN gave me a referral to a neurologist. Hmmm ... are ALL these doctors looking the other way????
Due to several health issues, including the migraines, severe osteoarthritis that was impacting the qualify of my life, and a mad itchy rash that had progressed to welts, which I had for two months. The good doc had prescribed cortisone cream. I decided IT WAS TIME TO TAKE CONTROL OF MY HEALTH and I went to a nautropath.
She diagnosed me with yeast syndrome and put me on a very restrictive diet; no sugar, no caffeine, no dairy, no flour, no processed foods, no alcohol -- eat organic, whole foods, drink 1/2 your body weight in water every day, de-tox the liver, and take probiotics.
Here is where I did something crazy. I decided to go off all prescription drugs. This included Effexor and Diclofenac (anti-inflammatory). My ND was very much against this given her knowledge of issues with Effexor withdrawal. I couldn't imagine it being any worse than what I was dealing with every month, so went full steam ahead.
My withdrawal story is a good one. I had three days of what I would consider mild withdrawal --- mild given what I had been through every month the year prior. The brain zaps were -- thank goodness -- mild. That was what I was most frightened of. I was mad thirsty all the time, and the crazy bitch episodes are still ongoing. I mean out of the clear blue I feel like I need a straight jacket in lieu of wringing someone's neck. I'm on day 11 free of Effexor and I couldn't be more thankful to be free of that drug.
Now, I'm seeing lots of discussion here about helping your body to get through the withdrawal using natural means. I can only surmise that given I'm in the midst of a de-tox and anti-inflammatory diet, my withdrawal was eased. Here's what I was doing . Take it for what it's worth. Everyone is different, but something made my situation tolerable.
1. No alcohol; no sugar; no dairy; no coffee (God, giving up Starbucks was tough).
2. Daily baths with 4C epsom salt and 4C baking soda. THis pulls the toxins out through the skin.
3. Castor oil packs (search Internet for instructions). Put flannel soaked in castor oil on body over location of liver, cover with plastic, put heating pad on top of plastic and rest for 45 minutes. I did this for about a week, which was as much as I could stand. Castor oil has a well-earned reputation. ;-) ALso pulls toxins out through the skin.
4. 15 min. a day in a sauna sweating like there's no tomorrow.
5. A liver cleansing product of your choosing.
6. Drink 1/2 hour body weight in oz. of water per day. Add fresh squeezed lemon for additional benefit.
7. Exercise lightly. De-tox is hard on your body, but if you're used to regular exercise, continue it in a modified fashion to maintain your fitness and help clear your mind.
8. Applaud yourself every morning when you wake up that you are one day closer to having it over.
Like I mentioned, it's been 11 days for me and I'm still the crazy bitch at times, but the dizziness, nausea, dry mouth, and brain zaps are gone. Remember, everyone is different.
OK, back to my original question. Is there a class action suit yet?

I am right with you. My effexorcism has been a NIGHTmare.
One other thing that assists in the detoxing is to drybrush your skin upwards towards the heart all over before the bath. Use a good bath brush.
Bikram Yoga is working for me. Big time. I am now down to 12.5 mg of Effexor (from 300 mg for hotflashes :| in November).
I am a nutcase at times and my temper is short, but my husband just has to understand. This is not me -- and hopefully soon I will emerge a more aware and happy person.
Good luck. It was nice to hear a person taking control in a healthy manner.

Pam - i really hope the last bit goes well for you. ive been lucky in that brain zaps havent been present in my withdrawal at all!
Cyclefitness - totally agree with your post too - withdrawal has been horrid but each day i think dont give up now - your so nearly there.
every little feeling in my body though i think, is it due to withdrawal??! For example, i have been having wierd dull pains shoot through my jaw where the ear is attached to your head - does that make sense? it just feels wierd and ive never had this feeling before! i just dont know anymore what is real and what is withdrawal!

ems x - I can so relate!
My muscles are so tight you could play a tune on them. I've been to the massage therapist once a week, plus have two tennis balls in a sock which I roll on my back when I can find an open wall. :-)

Oops ... can't type; must be Effexor. (see what I mean!)
I also have weird pain in my heels. I can't figure out if it's the achilles heel or something in the heel bone. All I know is that when I press on a spot very close to where my foot hits the floor, it's very, very tender.
Oh, and does anybody have ringing in their ears? Sheesh. Wish I could turn it off.
I wonder how long before we can't use Effexor as our excuse?

right this second im sat at work and just feel like any sec im going to crack up and go mad! my head feels all woozy and my fingers are really tingly. think my work mates must think im nuts coz one minute i need the heater on then its back off again. i just feel really numb today - its such an odd feeling. really feel like i need to lie down. i just down know tho if its all just in my head and because im expecting withdrawal, i am feeling things that i would usually just ignore! arghhhhh!
i dont get ringing in my ears thank goodness and bacl and muscles have been ok i think!
one thing i saw in your other post Cyclefitness, was the itching - dont know about anyone else too but sometimes my skin is soooo itchy that i scratch it until it bruises. i was always convinved i had some sort of allergy and even dust mite allergy - some mornings i wake up and cant stop sneezing. i read once that someone else had this with effexor too. hmm seems that effexor can be related to just about everything!
has anyone really taken this further? taken the hell they had with withdrawal to court or stgh? perhaps we could write to the UK panorama or watch dog? (anyone here in the UK?) i remember they once did a report on seroxat and suicide levels. i just feel like we are all suffering in silence - like no one really has a clue what we are all experiencing here!
grrr, anyways, back to work - rant over

I'm glad to see that someone else has been prescribed Effexor for hormonal issues. After I get off this mess, I will look for something else to help me with the hot flashes that is way more safer! I too can't believe there has not been a class action lawsuit brought about because of this drug and I still see Effexor XR advertised on the TV! So far I've not been bitchy towards my husband and he's read several of the posts on this site and is very supportive of what I'm doing. He was so surprised to find out that this drug was so dangerous. Hang in there Em! We're all pulling for you. During those times when you're thinking about how bad you might be feeling, try hard to think of all the beautiful things that this world has to offer you once you're off this drug! If ever there is a class action lawsuit filed, I want to know about it!

My story is a long one but I will try not to babble. The crazy part is that I can relate to each and every post and finding this forum is what has helped me to make it through this hell. I have been on effexor for about 3 years now. I started taking 2 pills (each 37.5 mg) and after a year my doctor at the time increased this dose to 115.5 mg. I have always been one to trust my doctor without questions. I have had many, many symptoms over the past couple of years. I developed heart palpatations and arrhythmia that affected my life but after many tests, I never got a true answer as to what was causing this. It became something that I just had to deal with. I also started having symptoms that seemed to mimic pre-menopause. Even though I have a history of high blood pressure I was prescribed a low dose of estrogen. Almost immediately I began to experience blood pressure spikes and ocular migrains (I was teaching my class and literally couldn't read the words on the board). I was taken off of the estrogen immediately but unfortunately these 'episodes' continued. I had a brain scan and other investigative tests that all came back negative. Meanwhile the daily blood pressure spikes continued (the worst one being 218/186!) I finally found a family doctor who would take me on as a patient and after reading my 9 pages of journalling (!) he immediately suspected that I had developed a toxicity to effexor. The withdrawal process started immediately and within a couple of days my blood pressure spikes and other symptoms stopped entirely. In 2 weeks I went from 3 pills to 1 pill. While my blood pressure was sitting lower than it has for a couple of years, my belly suddenly started to swell. That was back at the beginning of January and I still am unable to wear T-shirts in public because I am so embarrassed at how unnaturally distended my stomach can be. 10 days ago, my doctor took me off the final pill hoping that my stomach would return to normal. I have had 10 of the worst days of my entire life experiencing basically all of the withdrawal symptoms as others on this site. I honestly feel that it is thanks to this site that I have survived this process. Reading that other people have gone through what I am going through makes me feel like I am not crazy and that there is a light at the end of the (VERY long) tunnel. Thank you for that!
My contribution is that I have found that along with Omega fish oil capsules, vitamin B, LOTS of water, milk thistle, hot lemon water, epson salt baths and herbal teas, regular doses of Benedryl has really taken the edge off of the worst symptoms (I HATE the brain 'zaps'!)
I would be thrilled if anybody could relate to my swollen belly. Has anybody experienced this unusual stomach distension? ... and if so ... will it ever go away?!

Wow...Shelly what a time you are having. Hang in there. Keep reading these posts. It does get better. Have to say that mikemo's tapper method has worked for me. Last dose was 5 days ago. Had three days of every symptom I read about and every symptom I had on the 'drop days', only worse. Though no stomach bloating I did have some kind of stomach thing going on. But, woke up yesterday and felt great. Felt normal. For me once I got to the really low doses - 5mg - it was best for me to just go for it. Maybe I am lucky but I think this is it ;). I also think all the good stuff helps-omega 3, B12, lots of water and sleep. I am so thankful for this site and everyone who shares. Adker

Shelly, i havent had a swollen tummy but i had terrible IBS last week. i suffer from irritable bowel due to a phobia i have which brings on anxiety which then brings on the IBS. its funny but i have read that effexor is used to treat IBS or one of the side effects can be that it controls IBS but i have found that my IBS is no different at all. last week it was really bad and i had diarrhea for about 7 days! great...not. its calmed down now. its just wierd how the withdrawal goes through stages.
When i was down to about 10mg per day, i felt really nauseas and dizzy but then last week it was the ibs (drop down to about 5mg) and this week...who knows!
Adker - how are you feeling after 5 days effexor free? i am down to literally about 2mg now (hard to measure though with cutting the pills)im soooo tempted to stop now but im really busy the next couple of weeks and just scared bascially that i will feel like crap. think i might give it a go tomoz as im pretty free till monday and even then if i do feel like poo then i can easily cancel my plans - free cinema tickets and won tickets to a theatre show on tuesday - so not like its mega important but still dont want to let this effexor control what i can and cant do hey!
right - back to work i think!

Shelly:
At the risk of introducing another challenge into your already challenging equation, have you considered eliminating sugar out of your diet to see if that helps with the IBS?
This is very tough to do but since I did that the second week in January I have never felt better in my life (well, other than the Effexorcism event).
I know the candida issue is controversial and a leap of faith, but I have had a phenomenal experience with it. The ND (nauturopath) community has a strong belief that yeast contributes to many autoimmune responses such as IBS. I still look for research that validates their position, but have found something better; my own experience.
I presented to my ND with a rash and welts that I had had for three months. The rash got progressively. I'd wake up in the morning and take the hairbrush to my neck and back. I used a fork once and left awful marks that caused my husband to raise an eyebrow regarding what I was doing in my spare time. ;-)
In any event, she had me go completely off of sugar. Seven days later the rash was gone. Now, I was still on Effexor at this time, so given that it went away while still on it, I can't blame Effexor.
To challenge the results, I ate four chocolate covered strawberries on V-day (yummy). The very next day the itching was back. Conclusion: yeast.
The other side effect of the yeast is terrible bloating, gas, and stomach distention. That has all gone away for me and I've lost five pounds.
Just something to consider. Eliminating sugar (which feeds yeast) is not an easy task for people who have a lot of it in their diet, but once you connect with how good you feel without it, it's easy to resist the temptations.
Now, if you decided to go down this path, be very prepared to experience a week of headaches and wild mood swings. Four weeks into my sugar detox I decided to also go off Effexor -- I don't recommend anybody try that at home, unless you're a masocist. ;-)
I'm now 13 days since my last Effexor pill (cold turkey) and the relief I feel now that I'm back in control of my body (to the degree I can be in control) is amazing. Every day or so I get a mild brain zap, but it's easy to ignore.
Keep focused on the end game!! You will succeed in the end.

Cyclefitness,
Thank you for your response. My heart actually leaps when I hear that people have ideas for me because the level of desperation that I feel brings me to tears (I am at school and just had an emotional breakdown to another teacher who asked how I was feeling ... oops).
I am ready to try anything. I went and bought the strongest laxative that I could find and I am going to use that to try to get my body to a place where I can start something (diet change) that might prevent me from getting back to where I am now. I appreciate your advice and plan to try going sugar free. If it is the yeast that is reacting and the sugar that is provoking it - can I have the yeast if I cut out the sugar? My other questions would be .. why?! I have gone through what would be easily that hardest 3 months of my life and it is now that my body has decided to have an adverse reaction to food? It feels like getting kicked when I am already down. Again - thanks for the support - it means a lot to me right now!

One never knows when food allergies are going to take over. I'm 47 and I think my body just said 'enough.'
From what I hear from my ND, yeast is pretty tricky to eradicate. I would recommend an Internet search of the topic. You can ready by blog here: http://www.itgurl.com/blog. I have some links there that relate to yeast. Read up on it.
My particular therapy has gone like this: 1) Stop feeding the yeast by eliminating sugar, 2) Kill the yeast (naturopathic remedies - I used oregano oil capsules provided by my ND), and 3) feed your body probiotics (the good bacteria that yeast has overrun). I've been on three strengths of probiotics so far.
I would highly recommend you work with an ND. They aren't licensed in my state, so I've had to pay out of pocket. Not sure where you live, but I know there are -- I think -- 13 states in the U.S. where they are licensed.
Given what you're going through with the Effexorcism and from what it sounds you're a student, I would suggest that maybe you just get through the Effexor withdrawal first and deal with the itching after you've stabilized. I just recommended eliminating sugar as a stop-gap. It's a good start in addressing the yeast once you feel better.
But remember what I mentioned, if you are addicted to sugar -- like most of us are -- you will feel pretty yucky from the elimination of it from your diet.
I only did both at the same time because I'm crazy like that and I have an extremely supportive husband. Your support structure is very important, even if it's only an alternative practitioner like an ND. Don't try to do this on your own. One can only take so much before they break.
The simple things you can do now are to get exercise. Drink lots of water. Go to the gym and sit in the sauna. Take hot baths in epsom salts and baking soda. Be kind and gentle to yourself and understand your body is going through a lot.
And to answer your question about 'why?' Everybody is different in their composition, constitution, and consumption, so don't judge yourself. Respond to what your body is telling you and don't worry about where others are.
That's my motherly advice, regardless of how old you are. ;-)

'Effexorcism' - I love it! Shelly - I'm 42 and have also been experiencing perimenopause symptoms! I thought the depression that I was prescribed Effexor for in the first place was a side effect of the perimenopause, but it may well be the other way around. I don't remember if the hot flashes came first or the Effexor came first. I am stepping down from 75 mg per day, and so far doing well. The only days that I notice any difference are the major step-down days, when I go down 20mg. But it's a small price to pay to be rid of this evil drug!

To Ems....It will be a week tomorrow effexor free. Still feeling totally good. I was so afraid I would have the zaps for ever because other people had but they are gone. Also no more crying fits etc. I did time the last dose going into four days off from work. I would not have been able to work. Could barely drive with all the brain zaps. I have to say it wasn't like this when i stopped Prozac which I was taking for peri-menopause a while ago. That was a breeze. Just did every other day for two weeks. No problem.

I was recalling today that the first week I experienced the most gut-wrenching dreams that I have ever experienced. They had such clarity and dug way back to when I was a little girl. Oddly enough several of them were about my grandfathers, both of whom I really didn't have a relationship with.
In the morning I would be relieved that I didn't have brain zaps keeping me up, but would go into crazy crying spells about the dreams. I would jump out of bed and rattle on to my husband about every little detail, crying all the way.
These were like a catharsis for me. I felt emotionally cleansed in a weird way. And, again, I was relieved they weren't the horrible nightmares I used to get around my cycle every month.
Anyway, another day post-Effexor under our belts!!!

Em, Just wanted you and others on here to know that I haven't taken any Effexor for almost 72 hours. Though I'm having brain zaps, not really bad ones, I'm feeling alright otherwise. A little tired because I'm not sleeping like I'd like to but I'll deal with that as opposed to taking the drug! I'm thinking that it's going to get easier as each day goes by, in fact I've made up my mind that it will get better every day because it's what I want! Hope you're hanging in there Em!

wife is 4 days off effexor was tapered down to 75mg from 225 and did so over several months. right now she is misserable. zaps, naussea, vomitting. severe sleeplessness.a little less boating today I think. what will help at this point? Dr. said suffer or take more effexor at 37.5/ Our thoughts- why get back on it just to suffer again in a month. any ideas to ease the suffering?

Pam thats excellent news! im so happy for you! keep positive and im sure as each hour passes, the brain zaps will subside and your sleep will improve. have you tried benadryl to help with this. i have heard the US version is good (in the UK it is called Nytol and is a sleep aid!)
Wifes mate: i used the following to get me relatively withdrawal free.
depression.co.uk/anti_depressants/withdrawal/dosages.html " rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">http://www.clinical-depression.co.uk/anti_depressants/withdr...
and scroll down to where it says reduction from 1 x 75mg capsule. that might help. As for the nausea and horrid feelings, has she taken any benadryl (US)/ Nytol (UK)
i have found the active drug HYOSCINE has helped with my nausea. it is an anti sickness drug.

wifesmate - just read your post again. do you mean your wife went to 75mg and then has just stopped? if so then no wonder the withdrawal is so bad. im sure many people would agree that she needs to taper down now from the 75mg. i have been on 75mg for 6 years and am now down to about 4mg. this taper has taken me 3 mths now and i have still had nausea, tummy trouble etc so a drop from 75mg is MASSIVE for the body. if you think she can get through this withdrawal from 75mg then go for it and get off the devil drugs! but if not then maybe she could try the taper from 75mg or even start at say the 37.5mg part of the taper chart.

The Dr. quickly jumped her from 75 to 150 then to 225 at every step saying it wasn't working. Added clozapam to help her sleep since the 150mg dosage sleep and racing thoughts were too much. 16-18hrs sleep isn't living. We talked about getting off of them. 2 kids need their momma.
from 225 we went a step down method from 3 pills to altering 2 to 3 everyother day for a month, then just 2 pills(150) for a month then alered 1 to 2 for a month then just 1 for a month. so it was tapered but not 5mg at a time. she sure wasn't put on it that way. huge increases.
so 4th day free of all meds. resting a little off and on severe nausea and vomitting in a.m.. had baking soda and epsom salt soak 35min. it seemed to ease her swelling some. 2nd day she swelled up- a puffy look even a double chin.
sorry for the readability factor here. I don't know how some of you are even able to do it, I'm stressed just taking care of my wife.
The Dr. had her asst talk to me the 2nd time. They were more interested in the why and getting her to take more or just suffer through it.
The sheet that accompanies the pills state- your physician has judged that the benifits of the drug outweigh the risk and side effects.
I think it was post partom after our 2nd kid, and tried 5 or 6 other pills, just jumped from 1 to another like it was nothing.
We will get though this. We are not going to take more E aT 37.5mg, with the nausea she does not want to take any medicine at all. hopefully once we are past this, I can try to sum our entire ordeal in a way it could help others.

Wifesmate,
That is horrible. Were you on Effexor EX (capsules) or the plain Effexor (pills)?
Is she taking any of the clonozapam any more?
I have to tell you, putting her on 37.5mg of effexor would do a WORLD of good at this point. I know you hate it, but it really needs to be done slowly, for more reasons than I can explain in a single post. Don't worry, she'll get off of them, but the 75mg cold turkey is hard on a nervous system, and could introduce a new depression. Of course, don't tell her I said that. Just convince her that the 37.5mg dose will help her feel normal pretty quickly and then it will only take a couple more weeks to finish the taper. I really hope you consider it. 37.5mg is a far cry from the 225 she was on only 2 months ago. If you can get her to take 37.5mg every mid morning for the next 4 days, I PROMISE it will be a lot easier to quit in the end.
Think about this: How did she feel during the last week at 75mg? Pretty good? Well, she could feel like that again, starting tomorrow and slowly taper down the last 37.5mg using a spike drop system. It sure beats vomiting every morning.
As far as the puffyness goes, this is a major indication that the body is suffering. Addiction is more than just 'wanting' something. It is the body's 'need' of something. By taking away the Effexor cold turkey you have taken away the mechanism by which her system utilizes serotonin. And you've taken it away before giving her body a chance to remember it's own natural system of utilizing serotonin. She's left with a huge serotonin deficit. Recovering from that is like trying to fill a bathtub up with a trickle of water.
Another option would be to get her going RIGHT NOW on ST. John's Wort. This will effectively replace the Effexor system with a similar system of serotonin uptake. At least that will help. You can get her off of it later. It's natural.
You could even use 5-HTP in the morning and then St. John's Wort in the early evening for 4 or 7 days, and then quit the 5-HTP, but continue the St. John's Wort for another couple weeks. That's a great idea, and it's all natural.
But please don't let her suffer needlessly, though. This could last a month or more at her current stage. Just long term ill-effects are quite common when quitting Effexor cold turkey like his.

Now, I've got a little analogy to help you understand how this works. Though this isn't completely accrurate with what is actually going on, it is a great analogy to understand the taper method:
Your brain wants serotonin. So, effexor is like a valve at the base of your brain. At 300mg, the valve is closed. All of the serotonin stays in your brain. There is very little serotonin in your body. If you reduce the dose, the valve opens up a little. Some of the serotonin flows into your body, and your brain starts to complain that it isn't getting enough. So the glands react and produces more serotonin. Hopefully, the glands are capable of meeting the new demand. It takes a while. Eventually, the brain is satisfied and the valve has been opened slightly. You are all 'evened out' at the new dose. Now you can do it again.
What happens if you open the valve too much, by dropping your dose too quick? It's like opening up a 2' drain pipe. The serotonin flushes out of the brain, into the body, and you feel all kinds of horrible effects due to the lack of serotonin in the brain. Imagine that the glands are capable of producing enough to flow through a coffee straw, but the Effexor valve is like a 2' drain pipe. You have to open up that valve slow, because the little coffee straw will never catch back up, and you end up in depression again. Some people drop way too quick and then 'tough it out' for weeks and weeks waiting for the little coffee straw to fill up the whole body and brain. This, IMHO, is more damaging than being on effexor.
Now, the reason why the spike drop works so well is because [the glands need to realize that a change is happening.] The glands don't realize that you are dropping the dose if you just take out a bead here and there. You are opening the valve slowly, but the glands aren't really reacting to produce more serotonin. The glands need a wakeup call. So shock them with a big drop, and them close the valve back up, before your brain flushes out. Now your glands are working overtime to meet the new demand, and you can be comfortable, because you didn't lose any brain serotonin!

Mikemo,
Thank you for the information. You described it all very well.
I had 37.5mg called in, She has taken one, how soon will the serotonin take to reach a moderately comfortable level? Or give a little relief?
Could you explain the spike drop method.
Thanks.

1. I coined the phrase 'EFFEXORSISM' .
2. You all just want a quick fix - and dont want to do anything physical to fix it.
3. I have all the symptoms EACH AND EVERY ONE.... however, refuse to let it consume me.
4. Yoga offers me a way to escape, sleep, relax and be healthy.
5. All I read is pills, pills, pills. Its disgusting.
6. You can whine, complain, and let it consume you, but you dont have to.
