This remedy and its active principle, Eserine, form a valuable addition to Materia Medica. Stimulates heart, raises blood pressure, and increases peristalsis. Causes contraction of the pupil and of the ciliary muscles. Induces a condition of short-sightedness. Spinal irritation, loss of motility, prostration, with very sensitive vertebrae. Fibrillary tremors. Rigidity of muscles; paralysis. Depresses the motor and reflex activity of the cord and causes loss of sensibility to pain, muscular weakness, followed by complete paralysis, although muscular contractility is not impaired. Paralysis and tremors, chorea. Meningeal irritation, with rigidity of muscles. TETANUS and trismus. Poly myelitis anterior. Eserine is used locally to produce contraction of pupil.

Areca > general
Of use in Helminthiasis. Its alkaloid, Areolin hydrobrom contracts the pupil, acting more promptly and energetically but of shorter duration than Eserine. Serviceable in glaucoma. Acts also as a salivatory like Pilocarpine. Also increases the amplitude of pulsations of the heart and promotes the contractibility of the intestines.

Compare: Eserine - the alkaloid of Physostigma - (slows action of heart and increases arterial tension; in ciliary spasm and spasmodic Astigmatism due to irregular action of ciliary muscles; blepharo-spasms; Pupils contracted. According to Brunton, the tetanising properties of the bean belong to an alkaloid, Calabarine, and the paralysis to Eserine (or Physostigmine, as it is now called).

It is for its action on the eye, especially for its power of contracting the pupil, and thereby antagonising Atropine, that Physo. and its alkaloid Eserine are best known in old-school practice.

but it is not altogether without danger. Some animals to which it was administered experienced in five minutes great difficulty of breathing, slight cough, and fell down on one side, and some died. The dose given for this purpose is one grain to each pound of the dog's weight. The Hydrobromate of Arecoline has been used to cause contraction of the pupil. It acts more promptly and more energetically than Eserine, but its duration of action is shorter. According to Ricapet it surpasses Pilocarpine as a salivatory. It arrests the heart's action in diastole in poisonous doses, and in non-toxic doses increases the amplitude of the pulsations without increasing their frequency. It promotes the contractibility of the intestines, and as a teniafuge it requires no additional laxative. It should be given in pills coated with gelatin or keratin. According to F. Hobday (quoted in Amer. Hom. xxiv. 123), Tenaline is a much safer and more certain anthelmintic than Arecoline. He advises a dose of one minim of the solution to the pound-weight of the animal, either given pure or with a little water. It is not to be given hypodermically.
